The Spanish fifth seed had booked her place in the showpiece with a straight-sets victory over Karolina Pliskova on Saturday, but she was unable to fight for the title in Antwerp.

Belgian Kim Clijsters instead stepped in to play Petkovic in an exhibition match and won 5-3, although Suarez Navarro was left disappointed following what would have been her first Premier-level final.

"I woke up in the morning and I felt this pain in my neck," she told reporters. "I went to the physio to get treatment and tried to play at 11:30, then had physio again and tried to play again at 2:15, and I just couldn't serve. I couldn't play like I wanted. So I had to pull out of this final.

"I'm really sorry. I love this tournament and I had a great week. I really tried today."

Petkovic - who ensured her return to the world's top 10 prior to making the quarter-finals this week - was left to reflect on a sixth career title, albeit in unfortunate circumstances.
