Tanzania Premier League side Azam FC have lost 1-0 to visiting Wydad AC in a Group B match of the 2025/2026 CAF Confederation Cup, a result that significantly raises the stakes for Kenya's representatives.

With the Tanzanian giants suffering their second straight defeat in the group stage, the pressure now shifts entirely to Nairobi United to salvage the region's hopes and capitalize on their rivals' stumbling start.

The complexion of Group B has changed dramatically following the Friday evening clash at the New Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar. The Moroccan visitors, Wydad AC, cemented their dominance at the top of the table with six points, courtesy of a 57th-minute strike by Nordin Amrabat, set up by South African star Thembinkosi Lorch.

The loss leaves Azam languishing at the bottom without a point, creating a distinct opportunity for Nairobi United to surge ahead in the race for qualification.

Regional Rivals Take Center Stage

All eyes now turn to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Sunday, where Nairobi United will host Maniema Union. This fixture has transformed into a critical juncture for the Kenyan side.

Victory would not only secure vital points but also establish a crucial buffer between them and the struggling Azam FC. With Wydad seemingly running away with the group's top spot, the battle for the second qualification berth is intensifying early.

A win on home soil is now non-negotiable if Nairobi United intends to increase their chances of escaping the group stage.

The urgency is palpable. Any slip-up against Maniema Union could leave Nairobi United in a precarious position, dragging them into a dogfight at the bottom of the table alongside their Tanzanian neighbors.

The Naibois  know that maximizing points at home is the golden rule of continental football, especially now that the group hierarchy is beginning to take shape.

Elsewhere in the competition, regional interest remains high as Singida Black Stars FC prepare to face Stellenbosch FC in Group C. However, for Nairobi fans, Sunday remains the critical flashpoint where their continental destiny begins to unfold in earnest.
