Briton couldn't recover: Itauma stretchered out of the ring after Hrgović knockout /VIDEO/
For much of the fight, Hrgović was on the back foot, but then he unleashed a flurry of punches, knocking out Itauma on his home turf.
The British boxer was unable to recover after the knockout and was stretchered out of the ring, with footage of the incident quickly circulating online.
How Filip Hrgović Became a World Champion
Filip, fighting on enemy territory and in a hostile atmosphere, knocked out the previously undefeated British boxer Moses Itauma in the ninth round, handing him the first loss of his career.
Itauma started the bout stronger, displaying more aggression and quickly dictating the pace. This gave the Brit confidence and a significant advantage, leading to him knocking Hrgović down in the second round. However, the Croatian managed to get back on his feet before the referee counted to ten, and the fight continued.
Although he wasn't knocked down again, Filip remained on the defensive until the end of the sixth round. Yet, as the seventh round began, the first signs of fatigue started to show on the British boxer's face, who had finished all 14 of his previous career fights within the first six rounds.
As the championship fight progressed, Hrgović realized he had to go all-in, as he stood no chance of winning against Itauma on points. This aggressive approach ultimately paid off, as he knocked out the home crowd's favorite in the ninth round.
With a series of blows that forced referee Foster to stop the fight, Filip Hrgović became the IBF World Heavyweight Champion.
