Houston put the game to bed in the first half, sending a clear message to their rivals that they are aiming much higher this season.
Although the Mavericks had a slightly better start, Houston completely blew their opponents away in the second quarter. The Rockets dominated the period by an astounding 38-12, heading into halftime with a massive 32-point lead (70-38). Stifling defense and ruthless scoring efficiency allowed the hosts to comfortably manage their advantage throughout the second half, stretching the lead to as much as 37 points. Dallas could only manage to trim the final deficit in the fourth quarter.
Serbian ace Bogdan Bogdanović saw limited playing time and finished with five points on an efficient 2-of-3 shooting from the field, contributing to the Texas team's season-opening victory.
Leading the charge for Houston were Kevin Durant and Jabari Smith Jr., who dismantled the defense with 30 points apiece. They received excellent support from Alperen Şengün (23 points) and Amen Thompson (16 points, 10 rebounds). Fred VanVleet's return from a long injury layoff was another major plus, as the floor general showed no rust and dished out 11 assists.
For Dallas, Cooper Flagg was the lone bright spot with 32 points, while Kyrie Irving struggled, finishing with a modest 15 points.
