Bizarre Scenes at the US Open: Umpire Intervenes Due to Birds on the Net, Daniil Medvedev Furious

Daniil Medvedev seems to be a magnet for strange occurrences. The Russian tennis player is quick to get agitated by umpire decisions, opponent actions, officials, fans, and staff. Complaining and getting angry have long been associated with him. But something truly extraordinary happened at the US Open on Wednesday evening.

Medvedev faced American Sebastian Gorzny in his second-round match. He had little trouble with the 22-year-old, who already had a remarkable story playing at the US Open. Nevertheless, the Russian, seeded seventh in New York, couldn't resist a significant complaint to the umpire. During one point, two birds suddenly landed on the net. The umpire didn't intervene because of the sparrows and allowed play to continue.

Medvedev won the point after the ball went back and forth between the two birds. But just as he was about to celebrate, the umpire intervened, stating the point had to be replayed due to the animals' presence. Medvedev was utterly bewildered. Angrily, he confronted the chair umpire. "This is the worst decision I have ever experienced. This is truly awful," he declared with a flair for the dramatic.

Ultimately, the world number eight didn't need to worry too much, as he easily dispatched his opponent in three sets. In the third round, the Russian will face Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, who is seeded 26th in New York. Medvedev is a notorious complainer and has received multiple fines for his on-court behavior. At last year's US Open, he was hit with a hefty fine.
