The Belgian Football Association has called for a review of FIFA's regulations and disciplinary practices. This appeal follows the world governing body's decision to overturn the automatic suspension of USA striker Folarin Balogun ahead of the World Cup Round of 16 match between the two teams.
On July 5, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee rescinded Balogun's red card, which he received in a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, replacing it with a one-year probationary period. US President Donald Trump subsequently admitted to having a personal conversation with Gianni Infantino after the player's expulsion.
Despite an official protest from Belgium, Balogun participated in the match, which the "Red Devils" convincingly won 4-1. With this victory, they advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face Spain on July 10 in Los Angeles.
"We firmly believe that international football is best served by a disciplinary and governance system that fully respects the principles of legal certainty, transparency, equal treatment, and fair play. Regardless of the sporting outcome, the Belgian Association will continue to pressure FIFA to apply these principles correctly and consistently," the federation stated in its position.
