'Arrogant' Serena Williams Slammed at Wimbledon After Controversial Decision: 'Rules Are Rules'

Serena Williams' comeback at Wimbledon was extensively highlighted on Tuesday evening. The 44-year-old American legend lost a three-setter to Maya Joint and received a standing ovation from the crowd afterward. However, Williams is also facing significant criticism due to a controversial decision she made: skipping the normally mandatory post-match press conferences.

Tennis journalist Pav Gill was left utterly astonished when he received a message from the organization stating that Williams would not be appearing for media duties. Instead, he was handed a few lines from a statement, which he had to make do with. "It was wonderful to be back at Wimbledon. I never expected to be here again. The atmosphere was fantastic, especially when I walked onto the court. I cherish it dearly and thoroughly enjoyed that moment," Williams conveyed via the statement.

'That's truly next-level arrogance'

However, that didn't sit well with Gill. On X, he sharply criticized the American. "Wow, so Serena Williams requests a wildcard for Wimbledon in singles and doubles worth £100,000 and she doesn't even do the mandatory press conference?! That's next-level arrogance if you ask me. Her arrogance is truly on another plane. Wimbledon grants her a prime spot in the draw, and she can't even reciprocate? Rules are rules, except if you're Serena Williams, apparently."

Fine?

Novak Djokovic was fined nearly 10,000 euros in 2020 for skipping his press conference at the US Open. "I wonder if Wimbledon dares to fine Serena Williams for the same?" Gill openly pondered. "I think she's struggling with her defeat and that's why she missed her press conference. She still gets 92,000 euros for her loss at Wimbledon."
