Arman Tsarukyan Delivers Brutal Knockout of Mauricio Rufi, Demands Title Shot
Arman Tsarukyan is convinced his time has come and is pushing for a shot at the championship belt.
The fighter needed to make a strong statement at UFC 331, and his mission can be considered accomplished after he spectacularly knocked out Mauricio Rufi in the very first round. As it turned out, Tsarukyan didn't even need a takedown to dismantle Rufi with two devastating elbow strikes that sent the Brazilian to the mat. Referee Jason Herzog officially stopped the fight at 4:56 of the first round.
Rufi opened the bout with a well-placed right hand that connected with Tsarukyan, setting the tone early in the round. This prompted Tsarukyan to attempt a single-leg takedown before transitioning into a clinch against the cage.
Tsarukyan continued to battle for position, aiming for a takedown, but Rufi defended well as both fighters vied for dominance. A moment later, Tsarukyan landed a short elbow, followed by a second strike that rendered Rufi unconscious, sending him crashing to the canvas.
Tsarukyan wasted no time, scaling the cage to celebrate his victory with UFC CEO Dana White, clearly stating that his next fight should be for the title.
"I came here to save this city," Tsarukyan declared after his victory. "Tonight, Los Angeles is going to party. I knew I would finish him. The first elbow is from this coach, the second elbow is from that coach. It has to be a title fight or Mark Zuckerberg."
UFC Lightweight Champion Justin Gaethje has already stated he doesn't plan to compete again before 2027, while former champion Ilia Topuria recently revealed he's been cleared to fight again after his body recovered from an extremely tough bout at UFC White House.
Nevertheless, Tsarukyan certainly did more than enough to distinguish himself from the competition in the race for a championship fight. It will be incredibly difficult to deny him, especially after his stunning performance on Saturday at UFC 331.
