Argentina Ignored FIFA Rules After World Cup Final, Faces Sanctions

The World Cup final brought immense emotions. While Spain celebrated their title, Argentina's players made no secret of their disappointment. Lionel Scaloni's squad quickly left the stadium premises after their loss, ignoring their media obligations, for which the team now faces a financial penalty.

In the final match, Argentina failed to break down their opponent's well-organized defense, managing only two shots on target. They ultimately fell 0-1 to Spain after extra time, leaving their players to settle for silver medals.

Evading the Media

However, the defeat hit them exceptionally hard. Instead of passing through the mixed zone after the match, where media representatives from around the world awaited them, the Argentinians headed for their bus via a back exit of the stadium. Lionel Messi was the first to appear, followed shortly by the rest of the players and coaching staff, none of whom stopped for the journalists.

While FIFA regulations do not require all players to give interviews after a match, each national team is obligated to designate several players for media contact. Argentina failed to fulfill this requirement, and their football federation can now expect a fine.

Scaloni Without Excuses

The only team representative who faced the cameras and microphones was coach Lionel Scaloni. The coach offered no excuses, admitting that Spain was the better team. He also added that he was proud of his national team's achievement, which, despite the loss, reached the final of the world's most important football tournament.

After the match, he also hinted that his future remains open. His contract runs until December, and his statements suggest he wants to carefully consider his next steps. He did not rule out changes, though he emphasized that he first wants to calmly analyze the situation.

Questions also hang over Lionel Messi. The Argentina captain visibly struggled with the defeat on the pitch after the final whistle. If he decides against further participation in the World Cup, the final against Spain could go down in history as his last World Cup match. He will be 43 years old by the time of the next tournament.
