Antoine Demoitie, 25, has died after being struck by a motorcycle following a crash at the Gent-Wevelgem cycling classic in France.

Belgian cyclist Antoine Demoitie has died at the age of 25 after an accident in the Gent-Wevelgem cycling classic on Sunday.

Demoitie was reportedly struck by a pace motorcycle after falling near Sainte-Marie-Cappel in northern France.

The Wanty team had described Demoitie's condition as "extremely serious" in a statement after he was rushed to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Lille.

The team then posted a picture of Demoitie on their Twitter feed on Monday stating 'Antoine Demoitie (1990-2016)' and said a statement will be released later in the day.

Another Belgian rider, Jens Debusschere, was said to have been hospitalised after he suffered a concussion in a crash during the same 243 kilometre one-day race, which was won by Peter Sagan.
