British-Nigerian claims Britain's heavyweight boxing title

Anthony Joshua, a British boxer of Nigerian descent, is Britain's new Heavyweight champion following his seventh round knockout victory over Dillian Whyte on Saturday night at the 02 Arena, London.

The 26-year-old who started his boxing career in 2007, was born in Watford to a Nigerian mother and British father of Nigerian descent.

Joshua, who is a 2012 London Olympic gold medallist came into the encounter boasting 14 straight knockouts in the first three rounds.

But Whyte, 27, stood up to the occasion, managing to throw  a few punches of his own.

However, Whyte was wobbled by a hook to the temple before Joshua finished the job with a savage uppercut.

With Whyte unconscious and unaware of his surroundings, referee Howard Foster called a halt to proceedings.

Next up for the former amateur world champion is former world title challenger, Dereck Chisora, who knocked out Croatian journeyman Jakov Gospic on the same bill.

And so, Anthony Joshua edges closer to a bout with Tyson Fury, who defeated Wladimir Klitschko two weeks ago.
