The ex-Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers centre was captured on video viciously striking Per Helmersson with his stick ahead of a play-off clash between Deveaux's Rogle BK and VIK Vasteras on Thursday.

Rogle - now promoted to the Swedish top flight - terminated Deveaux's contract on Monday after footage of the incident emerged on the internet and, amid reports a warrant has been issued for the 31-year-old's arrest, police have confirmed they are looking into what took place.

Helmersson was able to complete the match and, in a subsequent interview, Deveaux questioned the seriousness of the incident.

"How bad can it be? They're shooting pucks at us and then there's a scrum," he told a local television station.

"Can he really be hurt? I mean he played tonight, he played the last game.

Asked whether he should be suspended, Deveaux responded: "No. Are you kidding?"
