Former Super Eagles captain, Oliseh was appointed coach of the national team in July 2015 but resigned abruptly in February citing contract violations, unpaid wages and benefits to players and assistant coaches.
Speaking in a recent interview, Pinnick revealed that he was on his way to negotiate with a Serbian coach when he got the call from his vice presidents that they wanted Oliseh.
“I was in Vancouver already in talks with the Serbian Federation President to release to me Veljko Paunovic who won the FIFA U-20 World Cup when I got a call from my two vice Presidents at home that they wanted Sunday Oliseh,” Pinnick told Complete Sports.
Pinnick said Oliseh was not ready to become coach of the Super Eagles as he ‘wasn’t proud of his past with some things he did and comments he made’.
“At that point I felt he was a Nigerian and should be given a chance and don’t forget he came highly recommended. I don’t have any regret calling him the ‘of Africa’,” NFF boss said.
Despite the controversial way Oliseh resigned, Pinnick says he still likes the former Super Eagles coach.
“I like Oliseh, but I still can’t reconcile the fact that you sent a mail thanking me for approving your trips to see some players play and 25 minutes later I got another one from him resigning,” NFF boss said.
Pinnick led NFF chiefs last week in Lagos to discuss the new coachand a new short-list has been drawn-up.
The president of the NFF in the interview revealed that lots of applications have been filed in from interested candidates for the Super Eagles coaching job.
Pulse Sports report that 20 coaches have applied for the coaching job of the Super Eagles and more are expected before the deadline on Wednesday, July 6.
“Everybody wants to coach Nigeria,” Pinnick added.
