Britain's Alex Dowsett broke the hour record with a stunning performance at the Manchester National Cycling Centre on Saturday.

The Movistar rider went 52.937 kilometres in 60 minutes, beating the mark set by Australian Rohan Dennis in February.

Dowsett - who suffers from the life-threatening condition haemophilia - comfortably surpassed the 52.49km recorded by Dennis.

The 26-year-old said: "I was expecting horrific and it was just terrible. I'm not going to lie, the first 30 minutes was easy. Easy compared to what I expected.

"I knew it was going to be easy early on, but I wasn't expecting that. I had to stay disciplined because the last 10 minutes was a bit grippy."

The record has been broken four times in the past 12 months, with Brandle, Dennis and Dowsett all bettering the mark of 51.110km set by Jens Voigt.
