Germany has not staged the Games since the country's reunification in 1990, having previously put on the sporting extravaganza in 1936 and 1972, with the latter overshadowed by the Munich massacre in which 11 Israelis were killed.

Should Germany be unsuccessful in the bidding process for 2024, they have already expressed an interest in hosting the 2028 showpiece.

The winning bid for 2024 will be announced in September 2017 at the International Olympic Committee Session.

Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo have the honour of staging the next two Summer Olympics.
