- Angelina cleared 1.91 meters in the qualifiers
- Topić won silver at the European Championships in 2024 and bronze in 2022.
- Last year, Angelina also secured a bronze medal at the World Championships.
A completely unexpected turn of events at the European Athletics Championships for Angelina Topić. The Serbian athlete, Angelina Topić, significantly underperformed in the high jump final, finishing in 12th place and missing out on a medal.
Despite easily clearing 1.83 meters on her first attempt, she hit a wall on her second. She failed to clear 1.88 meters in any of her three attempts. Here’s how her medal dreams were shattered.
At the height of 1.83 meters, Idea Pieron, Merel Maes, and Carmen Brus also concluded their competition, but in positions below Angelina.
Second Series
Angelina Topić knocked down the bar at 1.88 meters on her third attempt as well. This meant the top Serbian athlete finished the final in a disappointing 12th place.
Angelina also failed on her second attempt, leaving her with a do-or-die situation for her final try.
Topić faltered in the second series, failing to clear 188 centimeters on her first jump.
First Series
Angelina cleared 1.83 meters on her first attempt and advanced in the grand final.
Additionally, eight other jumpers successfully cleared the set height on their first attempt, while five managed it on their third. Yaroslava Mahuchikh opted not to attempt this height.
The grand final is scheduled to begin at 9:07 PM.
How did the qualifiers go?
Thursday morning at Alexander Stadium was scorching during the high jump qualifiers. The temperature was 32 degrees Celsius, rising to 36 degrees by the time the athletes were jumping.
The Serbian record holder had four jumps, all successful. Topić cleared 1.80m on her first jump, 1.84m on her second, 1.88m on her third, and finally 1.91m, which was the qualifying mark for the final.
Ultimately, 15 competitors cleared 1.91m, and all favorites advanced, including Olympic champion and world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh, as well as world silver medalist, Poland's Jozdik.
Angelina: I needed to wake up
After qualifying for the final, Angelina Topić expressed satisfaction but highlighted the brutal conditions in Birmingham. Although her performance seemed routine, the Serbian high jump record holder disagreed with that assessment.
It was much more demanding than we anticipated. We thought 1.88m would be enough for the final, but with 20 girls clearing it, we had to jump 1.91m. Fortunately, I had no issues with that height. I think I needed that to really get going. I woke up at 6 AM, and it was incredibly hot today. The most important thing was to survive this; now I'm going to sleep to be fresh for the final. Angelina Topić
Overcoming the high track temperature was extremely challenging:
It was really hot; nobody could have expected this, especially in this part of the world. We struggled, and I'm glad it's finally over so we can get out of the heat. We saw in the forecast that Saturday will be almost the complete opposite, and we just hope it doesn't rain, which isn't uncommon here. We have to be ready for any situation here; it's the same for everyone. Angelina Topić
The young Serbian athlete has a chance to win a medal and is considered one of the favorites:
- I hope so. I'm in good form right now, but judging by my competitors' results, it will be a demanding final.
