2027 World Championships Qualification Puts National Records to the Test

Lusa's analysis shows the demanding standards would only grant Portugal direct qualification in five disciplines: 1500m, long jump, triple jump, shot put, and discus.

World Athletics (WA) has released the qualification standards for the 2027 World Championships in Beijing, and the bar is set so high that not even all of Portugal's national records would be enough to secure direct entry.

The qualification system, approved by the WA Council, maintains a mixed model, with 40% of the spots filled through minimum standards and the remaining 60% via the world rankings. The latter is expected to be the most likely path for the majority of Portuguese athletes.

According to the Lusa agency, an analysis of national records shows that Portugal would achieve direct qualification for both men and women in five disciplines: the 1500 meters, long jump, triple jump, shot put, and discus throw. In the sprints, only Francis Obikwelu's men's records in the 100 and 200 meters, and Fernanda Ribeiro's women's record in the 10,000 meters, surpass the required minimums.

Obikwelu's times of 9.86 seconds (2004) and 20.01 seconds (2006) remain world-class, exceeding the Beijing standards of 9.95 and 20.07 seconds. In the 1500 meters, both Isaac Nader's time (3:29.37) and Carla Sacramento's (3:57.71), which dates back to 1998, would secure qualification.

In the jumps, the records held by Pedro Pablo Pichardo (18.04 meters) and Patrícia Mamona (15.01) in the triple jump, and by Gerson Baldé (8.46) and Naide Gomes (7.12) in the long jump, comfortably exceed the respective standards of 17.35m, 14.40m, 8.25m, and 6.86m. It's also worth noting Agate de Sousa's recent jumps, which, although not a national record, earned her the world indoor title and also surpass the minimum standard.

In the throws, the national records of Auriol Dongmo and Tsanko Arnaudov in the shot put, and Irina Rodrigues and Emanuel Sousa in the discus, would also be sufficient to punch a ticket to the World Championships.

However, historic figures like Fernanda Ribeiro and Rosa Mota would see their national records in the 5,000 meters and the marathon, respectively, fall short of the minimums. Ribeiro's time would be 0.45 seconds off the qualifying mark, while Mota's, set in 1985, would miss the required time by nine seconds.

The qualification period for most events runs from August 23 of this year to August 22, 2027, with specific windows for events like the marathon, race walk, and combined events. Portugal has, however, already secured spots in the women's and mixed 4x100m relays and the men's 4x400m relay, earned at the recent World Relays in Gaborone.

It should be noted that WA also reserves wild cards for reigning world champions and winners of other top-tier competitions, should they fail to qualify through the standard criteria.
