A 13-year-old teenager has died in Ciudad Rodrigo, western Spain, during celebrations for the country's World Cup victory, AFP reported. The tragedy occurred when a fountain in the city center collapsed.
"The City Council of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sorrow and extends its condolences for the death of the 13-year-old boy. What should have been a celebration for Spain's World Cup victory has turned into a tragedy," stated authorities, who also wished a speedy recovery to the other injured.
"A few minutes after 00:30, emergency services received numerous calls due to the collapse of a fountain onto dozens of people," reported the Castilla y León regional government.
According to Spanish media, many people had climbed onto the fountain to celebrate, leading to its collapse.
Spain's victory and the World Cup title, after a 16-year hiatus, sparked widespread celebrations across the country, with people reveling throughout the night. By Monday morning, central Madrid was littered with rubbish, beer cans, and bottles, as the city council faced the daunting task of clearing everything before the players' anticipated arrival mid-day. The team is scheduled to parade through the center of the Spanish capital and kick off celebrations at Cibeles Square, where the city hall is located, BTA added.
