Chafee, who was polling at the bottom of the Democratic field, announced his decision in a speech to the Democratic National Committee's Women's Leadership Forum in Washington, according to a copy of his remarks released by his campaign.
Polls have shown former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton leading the three Democratic candidates remaining in the race after Chafee's departure.
