Filling station attendant, security man arrested for stealing fuel

A fuel attendant and a security man at a fuel service station at Gbetsele, near Michael Camp, near Tema are in the grip of the Dodowa Police for allegedly siphoning fuel from the underground storage facility of their employer.

A police patrol team arrested the two after they found the fuel attendant, Nicholas Kwawu, 34, sweating, palpitating and near suffocation in the underground oil tank where he was siphoning the fuel into gallons.

The security man at the Compass Oleum fuel service station, Bernard Nyarko, 40, who is said to have deceived the police when he was questioned about a parked car near the fuel service station, was taken to the police station together with Kwawu.

Siphoning fuel into gallons

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Dodowa-Afienya Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Mr Kwesi Ofori, said the police patrol team was on its usual night duty about 1 a.m. last Sunday when they caught Kwawu red-handed siphoning fuel from the underground storage facility.

He said the curious policemen who saw a private car parked close to the Compass Oleum fuel station enquired from the security personnel but Nyarko told the police the car belonged to a man who had asked permission to go for food nearby.

However, while the police were leaving, a bang was heard and even though it appeared it had come from beneath their feet, Nyarko told them that he had accidentally hit his foot against the cover of the reservoir.

The police then opened the underground oil reservoir and found Kwawu holding a metal funnel while a number of gallons had been positioned near him.

Police investigation

Police preliminary investigations established that Kwawu and Nyarko had been siphoning fuel from the storage reservoir but they evaded detection.
