If you hear the name Samsung, you will most likely think of gadgets, phones, and electronics. Well, now the Korean tech giant is taking its innovations a step further by building a digital smart surfboard.
Yes, a surfboard.
The Samsung Galaxy Surfboard is powered by a Samsung Galaxy smartphone inserted into a special drawer on the side of the board itself.
The board uses LEDs to display wave conditions, tweets from fans and message from other devices. In a promo video for the surfboard, Brazilian Pro Surfer, Gabriel Medina, is seen training with the board and communicating with his father and coach, Jorge Medina.
“The professional surfer faces a real problem while training for competitions: the distance between him and his coach, who is at least a 100m away. This distance prevents the two from communicating correctly and instructions are often misunderstood.”
“The Galaxy Surfboard was specially developed for Gabriel Medina to improve communication between him and his coach. In no way is it intended for amateur surfing or for leisure activities,” says Samsung.
Last year, Toyota-owned Lexus took a step away from car-making and built a hoverboard. Google and Apple have also deviated from their more traditional offerings and gone into car making.
Now, Samsung is also trying its hands at other devices and instruments. Could this mean a new technological renaissance is on the way? We may just have to wait and see.
