Useni resigned today, March 17, 2016, during the plenary session of the assembly, giving personal reasons for his action.
The deputy speaker Hon. Muhamed Danladi Gwampo took over and presided over the session immediately after the former speaker's resignation.
The Clark of house Clark, Mr. Smaila Ukwen was therefore called to read the house standing rules.

Ukwen sited Order (2) Rule (9) of the house standing order who empowered the house to elect a new speaker whenever there is a vacuum.
