Protesters on the platform of Legislative Advocacy Coalition on Violence Against Women (LACVAW) stormed the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Wednesday, July 20, 2016  to condemn the alleged threat on Senator Oluremi Tinubu by her colleague, Dino Melaye.

Dressed in customized shirts, the protesters who sang solidarity songs were also seen carrying placards.

Chairperson, Board of Trustees of the 46-member group, Dr Charmaine Pereira, said Senator Melaye's action against Mrs Tinubu presented him as an "undeserving elected representative" of his people with a "severe incapacity for sound judgment."

"Senator Melaye's behaviour reflects an obvious inability to engage in productive debate and the acceptance or negotiation of dissent that is to be expected of a responsibility legislator.

"Senator Melaye's conduct jeopardises the possibility that men and women can contribute to the development of Nigeria in a manner that expects freedom from violence and discrimination.

"For the Senate to remain silent on Senator Melaye's conduct on the basis that it took place during a closed-door session, would not only be ethically inadequate but would also indicate complicity with the prevailing impunity against gender base violence and discrimination," she said.

The group demanded for a "strong" statement from the Senate President condemning Senator Melaye's behaviour and "compelling" him to retract his abusive comments on Mrs Tinubu.
