Sheriff is said to have been chosen because of his experience and, according to a PDP National Working Committee (NWC) member who spoke to Punch, his money.

“He (Sheriff) has money. He is fearless and he has the capacity to galvanise the north for the PDP,” the PDP NWC member said.

Sheriff was chosen as a possible candidate by the PDP’s National Caucus at a meeting which held early on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, in Abuja.

Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu is also reportedly being considered to lead the PDP.

The PDP’s previous chairman, Adamu Mu’azu was forced to resign due to the party’s woeful loss in the 2015 general elections.

The party’s chairmanship has been the subject of controversy in recent times due to the forceful filling of the position by former Goodluck Jonathan aide, Ahmed Gulak.
