Police arraign woman for collecting money under false pretence

Prosecutor Abdulkareem Mustapha told the court that the accused and others now at large committed the offences on May 22 at about 11 p.m., at Abule Ijoko, Ota.

A 51-year-old woman, Titilayo Olasumbo, on Wednesday appeared before Chief Magistrate A.I Adelaja, for allegedly collecting N457,000 from Obaji Austin under false pretence.

The accused, a resident of No.26 Akintayo Str., Iyana-Iyesi, Ota, Ogun, was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence.

Mustapha said that the accused and her accomplices conspired among themselves to obtain N457, 000 from Austin on the pretext of procuring travelling visa for him.

He said they failed to fulfil the agreement.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 419 and516 of the Criminal Code Vol.1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail by the court in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adelaja ordered that the sureties must reside within the court's jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

She further ordered that the sureties should swear to an affidavit of means and show evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

The magistrate said that one of them must be a civil servant of not less than grade level 10 with verifiable address.She adjourned the case till July 21 for hearing.
