US ends mission in Liberia

The five-month mission was officially ended on Thursday, February 26, after cases of the disease declined in the West African country.

The United States has officially ended its Ebola mission in Liberia, months earlier than expected.

The US sent about 2,800 troops to Liberia to help build treatment centers, most of which are now empty due to the waning of the epidemic.

“While our large scale military mission is ending...the fight to get to zero cases will continue and the (Joint Force Command) has ensured capabilities were brought that will be sustained in the future,” U.S. Army Major General Gary Volesky said.

The Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has expressed her gratitude to the US for the help rendered.
