The 21 girls, who were among more than 200 abducted by the sect in 2014, were freed following negotiations which the Nigerian government says were brokered by the Swiss government and the Red Cross.

Buhari made his comments via Twitter before leaving for Germany on Thursday, October 13.

“As I depart Abuja for Germany on an Official Visit, I welcome the release of 21 of our Chibok Girls, following successful negotiations,” Buhari said.

“The Department of State Services (DSS) has briefed me on the matter, and will continue to provide updates.

“Cooperation on the security & humanitarian situation in the Northeast will form a significant part of my discussions with Chancellor Merkel,” he added.

Buhari is expected to return from Germany on Saturday, October 15.

Meanwhile, the girls are said to have been released in exchange for the freedom of four Boko Haram members.
