President cancels FEC meeting

The latest development follows Buhari’s absence from last week’s meeting which led to concerns that he had fallen ill again.

President Muhammadu Buhari

No reason was given for the cancellation of the meeting, which usually holds on Wednesdays.

The latest development follows Buhari’s absence from last week’s meetingwhich led to concerns that he had fallen ill again.

Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed however dismissed the concerns saying that the president had other matters to attend to and as such instructed Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo to preside over the meeting.

“Mr President is not ill again. Mr. President is in town; Mr. President is attending to other issues. He looked at the agenda for the meeting and decided that the vice president should preside. It is not unusual for the vice president to preside over FEC meetings," Mohammed said.

Buhari absence from the April 12 meeting was the first since his March 10 return to Nigeria from a 49-day medical vacation in London.

Buhari had said, on arrival in Nigeria, that he did not remember being so sick in all his life.

He also said that he would soon need follow-up treatment.

Meanwhile, the Presidency has said that Buhari will receive further treatment in London and not in Nigeria.

The clarification was made by Buhari spokesman, Garba Shehu on Thursday, March 30, in denial of reports that Buhari had decided to bring his doctors to Nigeria.
