The unfortunate incident occurred during an ambush between Sari and Gudumbali in Borno state.
Umusu and his men were said to have been traveling from the state capital, Maiduguri to a location near Baga.

Other senior officers who have lost their lives to Boko Haram in the past two months include Lt. Col K. Yusuf (October 16, 2016), Lt. Col Abu Ali (November 4, 2016) and Lt. Col B. U. Umar (November 15, 2016).
