Senator says Nigerian civil war should be celebrated

Senator Ben Bruce has said the Nigerian civil war should be celebrated as a way of enlightening the youths of their history.

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, the owner of the Silverbird Galleria.

According to the current representative of Bayelsa East constituency at the Senate, celebrating some of the incidents that make up the history of Nigeria further help youths understand the need for unity and peace.

Speaking to journalists at the media screening of a new movie, 76, in Lagos, Bruce said the neglect on the history of the civil war is one of the reasons youths clamour for unrest and Biafra state.

"Today, you find out people and most especially the youths are clamouring for war because they have little or no idea of what and how the civil war nearly wrecked an ethnic in Nigeria. And you can't blame these youths because none of them were alive to witness the era which is best remembered. I will urge the FG to embrace the culture of celebrating our history as this will give an insight into what people went through.

"I was old enough to tell you details of the civil war and the bad memories of it. My young friend became a rebel while he was just a teenage and he was sent to the war front. I would listen to two radio stations to monitor what was going on. I will listen to Radio Nigeria as well as Radio Biafra. But today, Nigeria is better off and that is why I say if you don't know where you are coming from, you might certainly not understand where you are going to."

Senator Bruce has been one of the vocal lawmakers in the country, who has used the social media platform, Twitter to pass his message of hope to the youths.
