'Substandard tyres, more have led to 305 road traffic crashes in Kaduna, Kano'- Zonal Officer

The Zonal Commanding Officer RS 1 of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Victor Nwokolo, has revealed the number of accidents, injuries, and deaths recorded for the North.

Speaking at the flag off of a special operation curb road accidents in the North, the Officer said majority of accidents are caused by used, worn out or substandard tyres, News24 reports.

According to him, tyre bursts lead to 31% of accidents, 11% caused by speed limit violation, while loss of control by drivers makes up for 25%.

"The purpose of this operation is to clamp down on, used, substandard tyres, over speeding and overloading. This must be checked for the safety of the lives of Nigerians.

We are also going to check under-inflation and over-inflation of tyres because it also contribute to tyre burst.

We are also here to enlighten and educate motorists and the general public on the importance safe driving, which is necessary to save the lives of motorists and passengers.

We are going to apprehend those that are found wanting, they will be fined and prosecuted," Nwokolo threatened.

He was supported by the Kaduna State Chairman of National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Alhaji Babangida Jafar, who called for a collaboration between the FRSC and Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON).

Alhaji Jafar also called the Federal Government to reduce the importation of these tyres by tightening control at the borders.

"We loose our vehicles, drivers and third parties because of those factors,'' he added.

The FRSC has recorded 305 road traffic crashes in Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa States for the first quarter of 2016.

Over 254 people died, while 1,322 persons were injured in these accidents.
