'Avoid accidents by taking care of your vehicle tyres'- agency advises

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has some advice for motorists, especially those embarking on long distance travels.

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has some advice for motorists.

In light of the recent nationwide 6-day tyre monitoring exercise, the motorists have been advised to look after their tyres.

"We want to draw the attention of motorists on the need to maintain their vehicle tyres.

We want to draw the attention of motorists to ensure that vulcanisers carry out thorough gauging of their vehicles before undertaking long journey.

You should also monitor vulcanisers well while installing or mending punctured tyres in order to ensure that the right things are done to avoid disaster while in motion.

It is also the duty of every driver to carry out vehicle audit and look at the manufacturing date of each tyres,’’ he said.

Abu attributed 722 accidents in 2015 to tyre bursts, while urging motorists to check the date of manufacture before buying a new tyre.

The Katsina FRSC Sector Commander, Alhaji Abdu Bagadawa, also spoke on the relationship between tyres and accidents.

According to him, there had been 107 accidents between January and April, 2016, in the state, adding that 14 persons had died because of tyre bursts during that period.

Bagadawa ended his remarked by advising motorists to avoid used tyres, overtaking, speeding, making phone calls while driving, and more.

The Commander said avoiding these things would reduce the chances of getting into road accidents.
