Why Kim Kardashian's 'best advice' for women in business is insensitive
Kim Kardashian, two Kardashian sisters, Khloe and Kourtney and her mother, Kris Jenner were this month’s cover of Variety Magazine. They shared details of their upcoming show on Huly, ‘The Kardashians’.
Kim said, “I have the best advice for women in business,” Kim says. “Get your fucking ass up and work. It seems like nobody wants to work these days.
Of course, Kim's statement got her dragged online because it is outrageous for a billionaire to tell you that the reason you are poor is you do not work hard enough - as if working hard were the criteria for wealth and success.
Manual workers and hawkers work hard but earn little because success is more about working smart than working hard and access to opportunities, education and resources.
Perhaps if it were someone who has a grass to grace story like Oprah Winfrey, we would not be so upset but Kim was not the best carrier of that message.
Kim had a wealthy lawyer as a father and her first job was with the famous socialite, Paris Hilton. She grew up with privilege and her start in life was easier than most people.
However, I cannot say that Kim does not work hard and she just sleeps all day. She runs multiple businesses like KKW beauty, Skims amongst others. She also does the brand promotion and fittings for most of them and that isn't as easy as many people think.
Does she work harder than most working-class Americans or Nigerians in our case? No, she doesn’t.
Many people commented that her family offer people unpaid internships and for people who have so much money that seems rather unfair.
But this is not the first time someone famous has commented on how difficult it is to find ‘good hands’ or that people are unsuccessful because they are lazy.
When remuneration is low, do not be surprised that your employees lack the motivation to work.
Although, Kim is famous for advocating for prison reforms and clemency for prisoners she is not well known for giving back to women by creating opportunities for them and for that reason, it was not a well thought out comment.
