For some the idea of being friends with their ex is just unimaginable, given the circumstances under which the relationship crashed.
The terrible ex
It is unlikely that someone who caught her boyfriend trying to sleep with her sister would want to have anything to do with him ever again.

Neither would anyone extend the hands of friendship to an ex after escaping from his domestic violence tendencies.
Dating such people won't pose any ex problem. Obviously the ex is out of the picture and is harmless to the new relationship.
The great ex
On the other hand, there are people who broke up with their partner amicably; torn apart not by acrimony but circumstances beyond their control, beyond fixing.

So, although the relationship is over, these people will somehow remain very good friends even after one or both of them have 'moved on.'
In some instances, the friendship will remain dear as if they never broke up.
