Sponsored by Stanbic IBTC, students of Standard Bearers School (SBS) Lekki, Lagos, performed Ola Rotimi's historical tragedy, Ovonramwen Nogbaisi, at the Agip Hall of the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

The event, which attracted parents and students of the school, kicked off at 5 pm, had the kids displaying their exceptional skills as they warmed the hearts of the audience.

Commenting after the play, the proprietor of the school, Modupe Adeyinak-Oni told The Sun why the performance was chosen, "Five years ago, we had the Gods Are Not To Blame so we said, this year, we wanted another African play.

"It is so sad that many of African writers' plays are not available in the market. We searched high and low looking for Emotan, Obaseki and Moremi, among others, but we couldn't find them. Eventually, this was the only script they were able to get for us from Obafemi Awolowo University archives.”

According to her, "The emphasis on Nigerian play is to tell them about our beautiful history. Our children have to understand their own culture and embrace it so that they can transcend western culture knowing where they are coming from because they have a sense of their own history."

On emphasis on the arts at SBS, she continued: "It is because we believe that it is just as important as maths and English. I think that the arts prepare them for life. It is an accumulation of all these experiences that make the total child at the end of the day. In the world today, many children are going to graduate with first class so what sets them apart is what we are imbibing in them through the arts."
