Kach consolidates his Western fusion on "Afrotrap" EP

Kach is on the cusp of something bigger than he is, with his insistence on a core sound.

Several of Africa’s most impressive tracks in 2017 have relied on fusion music to power them to success. You could find the intersection between Ghana and Nigeria in the mellow Highlife flow of the ‘Pon pon’ wave. South Africa’s House music formation is also a distinct system prevalent in our music.

For Kach, his primary material is Western. Travelling from the heat of Lagos, to the bustle of Atlanta, he’s brought with him the elemental sound of Trap music back to Nigeria, where he is mixing the bounce with our music formation. African vibes meet the hustle of contemporary black Hip-hop, and a new genre is born – Afro Trap. Kach’s next steps in music is the consolidation of that sound, which he has done by dropping a 7-track EP with the most meta name ever “Afrotrap.”

Opener ‘Single,’ with its syncopation and vacant delivery speaks about a lady who is having fleeting loyalty issues. ‘Sarewajo’ brings on an unlikely name – Oritsefemi – who is shoehorned as an experimental guest. On this record, Latino guitars lead the way as Kach finds middle ground to express braggadocio and raw sauce. No ketchup.

‘Jump out’ offers a looping hook to spice up evening drive times. ‘Dino’, dedicated to the colourful Nigerian lawmaker (Dino Melaye), is architected on a Mike WiLL Made-It-esque dark vibe, while fan-favorite, ‘Odana,’ provides familiar grounds to build on.

Kach is on the cusp of something bigger than he is, with his insistence on a core sound. Fusion, wherever it is made has to propagate, and throws up the opportunity for pioneering recognition. Perhaps that’s the play here, perhaps not. But whatever it is, it is interesting enough to pay rapt attention.
