RMD and Ego Boyo; the most memorable Nigerian TV couple of all time
Considering their cultural longevity and depth of fanbase, Checkmate's Segun Kadiri and Ann Haatrope are unarguably Nigerian TV's greatest couple.
The news elicited excitement on social media and had many feeling nostalgic for the 90s pop culture phenomenon, "Checkmate."
A combination of an aristocratic family, cultism, politics, romance and polygamy, "Checkmate" was a hit that produced many stars, and a classic TV couple.
Boyo and RMD were first introduced as a duo to Nigerians as Ann Haatrope and Segun Kadiri; a couple in the Amaka Igwe TV series that ran from 1991 to 1995 on NTA.
"Checkmate" tells the story of Ann, a determined young woman who returns to Nigeria to revive her family business, Haatrope Investments.
To achieve this, she has to take on rivals like the immoral Segun Kadiri, who bears a long-time grudge against the Haatropes.
The characters meet for the first time in the 13th episode of the series when Segun pays Ann a visit after he found out he was about to lose a contract to her.
"I wanted to see what I was up against," he said with a menacing tone. That particular meeting kicked off an engaging and entertaining rivalry between the two.
For several episodes, viewers watched Ann and Segun grow from hero-villain rivals to a hot romantic couple still fondly remembered in the Nigerian TV history.
The love/hate relationships and subtle buildup of the sexual chemistry between the two remains second to none.
It has been 26 years since Ann and Segun made their debut on Nigerian TV, but they are still significant.
The tale of Ann and Segun has been passed on from one generation to another, creating an intense fan base that cuts across the old and young generation.
In 1996, the duo returned as Tega and Peggy in another pop culture staple, "Violated," reinforcing their spot as an on-screen magical duo.
Considering their cultural longevity and depth of fan base, RMD and Ego are unarguably Nigerian TV's greatest couple.
