Kenya's censor board says streaming service must be regulated and conform with standards

"Some of the content on Netflix promotes extreme violence and nudity, eroding our moral standing as Kenya," KFCB reportedly said.

Naspers says can cope with Netflix challenge in South Africa

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has stated that the online streaming platform, must be regulated and conform with the classification standards.

Therefore some content will be blocked if deemed inappropriate by the board.

Netflix will be subjected to the film classification guidelines in the country. Since it is in Kenya then it needs to be subjected to the Kenyan ratings for consumer protection,”,  Emmah Irungu, KFCB head of compliance, reportedly said.

On the other hand, The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has disagreed with the censor board.

According to CA, Netflix is more like online platforms like YouTube or Facebook, online platforms that have provided services to Kenyans without a license.

Netflix spoke to Quartz on its censorship mechanism saying;

“The service includes ratings guides and episode synopses to help people make informed choices about what is right for them and their families, and we also provide a pin-code system to ensure children can’t view certain content.”
