Nigeria needs girl-child specific education policy — Onyeka Onwenu
An education that is specifically for the promotion of girl child education is what Nigeria needs, says the Director-General, National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), Onyeka Onwenu.
Speaking at the annual Women and Girl summit held at the NCWD headquarters in Abuja, Onwenu called on the Federal Government to develop a new education policy for the girl-child.
According to her, existing education policies are not sufficient.
“In everything we do, we must begin to factor in the girl-child and be specific about it, in terms of education policy,” the DG said.
“We normally fit in the girl child in cracks, but we can do better if there is an education policy that is well articulated and demonstrated."
Onwenu also urged the government to be more proactive in supporting women and allowing for the inclusion of women at the policy making levels of governance.
"The women have to be seen to be participating in making the laws for the country by instigating processes in the National Assembly and the state Houses of Assembly."
The DG also advocated for the establishment of centres for women development all over the country.
NCWS is a non-political non-profit organization set up to look into the societal, intellectual growth of women in Nigeria and Africa.
