The dissolution of the council was reportedly announced on the Nigerian Television Authority late Thursday night.
The Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Mr. Biodun Olanrewaju confirmed this development, saying, “I also saw the advertorial announcing the dissolution.”
The Chairman of the Non Academic Staff Union in the university, Mr. Wole Odewumi, when speaking to Punch, said that members of his union and those of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities had been jubilating following the dissolution.
According to Odewumi, the Federal Government will appoint an acting vice chancellor to direct the affairs of the university pending the constitution of a new governing council which would appoint a substantive VC.
“We are very happy today," he said, "We have been jubilating since we heard the announcement."
Chairman of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Ademola Oketunde, reacting to the news, said, "This is a victory for all and one that is well deserved."
“We have seen that President Buhari has a listening ear and we will continue to appreciate him for dissolving the Governing Council.”
“However, we have not won totally as we will stay here till we have an Acting VC who will steer the affairs of the university."
The Federal Government’s action is coming after several petitions by NASU and SSANU, who are also in court to challenge the “imposition” of a vice chancellor on the institution.
