Thirteen students were killed and 34 others were injured after suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a daring suicide bomb and gunfire attack on the Federal College of Education (FCE), Kano.
13 Students, 1 Lecturer, 1 Baby Killed ...34 Others Injured
Yesterday's attack on the Federal College of Education (FCE) Kano left 15 people, including 13 students, a baby and a lecturer dead
An infant and a lecturer were also killed by the attackers who struck around 1.53pm, arriving in a tinted Prado SUV.
Witnesses said two suicide bombers entered two separate lecture halls filled with hundreds of students and blew themselves up after firing automatic weapons.
Student Pulse gathered that the bombings were synchronised.
In the chaos that followed the blast, other gunmen opened fire on fleeing students.
A source quoted by Daily Trust gave the following account:
“When I heard gunshots, I peeped through the window of my office and I saw 3 men in black suits wielding AK-47 guns. They entered through the main entrance of the school and moved fast towards the lecture halls.
“The first man went into the new theatre and from my office I heard him shooting, like his other colleague who went towards the theatre of Arts and Social Sciences.
“I heard the first explosion from the new theatre hall and after few minutes, the other one blew up himself in the Arts and Social Sciences theatre.”
The Kano State Police Commissioner, Adenerele Shinaba, said the attackers had engaged policemen in a gun battle before attacking the college.
Shinaba confirmed the death of 17 people, including the suicide bombers.
“So far, what we have is that 15 people are dead, including the two suicide bombers, and about 34 persons are injured. They are receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said.
He added that a third attacker "that was carrying AK-47 rifle and some explosives" was shot.
"When one of the security men shot him, the explosives in him exploded killing him alone,” the Commissioner added.
It will be recalled that on the 30th of July a bomb explosion at the Kano Polytechnic, killed 8 students who were checking the NYSC mobilisation list.
