The cover letter is your first impression to a potential employer. It allows you to express your interest, skill, knowledge and passion for the job you're applying for.

The same way a well-written cover letter can get you the job so the poorly composed one can send your application straight to the recycle bin.

So, if you're going to submit any cover letter anytime soon, make sure the letter contains these three elements.

1. Prove that you've done your homework

While your resume or curriculum vitae tells the hiring managers about your skills, work and academic history, the cover letter shows them that you have made your research about the job you're applying for and you know what you are getting yourself into.

The intro paragraphs of the cover letter should mention the job role you're applying for, the company offering the job and how you know about it.

2. How your skills relate to the job

It is your cover letter that explains how the skills you highlight in your CV connect to the job in question. Devote a paragraph or two in your cover letter to explain what you can do for the organization and how your skills can add value to the company.

3. Express your excitement about the job

Don't close your cover letter without expressing your interest in the job. State how much you've been looking forward to chasing your career dream in the job and how your passion lies in the job role.
