This was confirmed by the Vatican on Wednesday, March 16, 2016.

The decision was reached by the pontiff, who will be using the handle, 'Franciscus', from his papal name, joining other world celebrities on the social media platform.

As expected, Pope Francis will use his status as the leader of the roman catholic church to reach more people, preaching the message of salvation to the world.

The Pope is not a social media novice. On micro blogging site, Twitter, he is being followed by about nine million people under the handle, @Pontifex, tweeting in nine languages including latin.

Kevin Systrom, Instagram’s CEO and co-founder, met the pontiff at the Vatican last month, later revealing they had discussed “the power of images to unite people across different cultures and languages.”

He said, “It was by far one of the most memorable experiences of my life!”

Pope Francis has always been inclined towards the social media. He made this known in January 2016, when he spoke against online trolling.
