The Slovenian clinched gold medals in the downhill and giant slalom at the Sochi Olympics last year.

Maze also won the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup overall title in 2013 with a record points tally, and was runner-up to Anna Fenninger in the 2014-15 season.

"As I did not officially announce my plans for the future yet, I thought it would be the right time to write you this message," Maze wrote on her official website.

"After 16 long and successful seasons, practicing all disciplines, I feel that my body and my mind need a longer rest than usual.

"I will allow myself a one year break before taking any further decision."

Maze is just one of six women to have won in all five World Cup disciplines, and among three to have completed the feat in a single season.
