Nigeria's education system is short of international standards because the ‘best brains’ in the country are 'running' away from the teaching profession.
The Provost of the Federal College of Education (FCE) Abeokuta, Dr. Ayodele Ajayi, said this while speaking at the college’s convocation ceremony.
He said the teaching profession is not attractive to the most qualified hands, who look elsewhere.
"The best brains are running from teaching profession and that is why we are still battling with international standard of teacher/student ratio in the country,” he said.
Ajayi said even those who apply to Colleges of Education do so after failing to get admitted into regular universities and polytechnics.
He added that institutions contribute to the damage by recruiting unqualified teachers that would be willing to accept meagre payments.
