Trailing 3-2 in the dying stages of regulation time, the Flames were staring down the barrel of a 3-0 series deficit.

But Johnny Gaudreau's game-tying goal with 20 seconds to play gave the home fans at the Scotiabank Saddledome hope, before the stands erupted when Mikael Backlund scored in the fifth minute of overtime.

After suffering heavy defeats in the opening two games in Anaheim, Calgary started well on home ice, scoring first.

Brandon Bollig's opener came just two minutes, seven seconds into the contest, but the Ducks would lead 12 minutes later after Patrick Maroon and Corey Perry scored.

Joe Colborne provided an equaliser for the Flames early in the second period, but Matt Beleskey broke the tie with a goal four minutes later - only for Calgary to bite back at the death.

The Chicago Blackhawks are within one win of a spot in the Western Conference finals series, after taking a 3-0 series lead on the Minnesota Wild.

The Blackhawks were led by goaltender Corey Crawford (30 saves) to a 1-0 shutout victory over the Wild in game three at the Xcel Energy Center.

Patrick Kane's powerplay goal in the first period proved enough, as the Wild could not surpass Crawford.

Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said they remained hopeful of prolonging their Western Conference semi-final series.

"We know what we're up against. Not going to get up here and give a rah-rah speech. We got to win a game," Yeo said post-match.

"We came back from the dead once before this season. And the only way we did that was with character and belief."
