Nigerian racing driver gunning for F1

Nigerian racing driver Ovie Iroro is gunning for the top car racing competition in the world, The Formula One.

After becoming the first Nigerian driver to compete in the British Formula Ford Championship Iroro has also set his sights to follow the footstep of World Number one, Lewis Hamilton who is the first black man to win the Formula One.

Ovie Iroro moved to the UK about three years ago to pursue a career in Mechanical Engineering student at the University College London.

While there he has also pursued a career in motorsport and won the Best Rookie award at Rye-House club championship in 2012 and was part of the UCL BUKC rookie team that placed seventh overall in the UK.

“My aim is to get to Formula 1 in future; that’s the pinnacle of motorsports. It’s every young driver’s dream to get there and hopefully, with the right backing and funding, I will make it to F1,” Iroro told Punchin an interview.

He is already flying the Nigerian flag high as he represented the country in 2014 at the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile young drivers academy held in South Africa.

Speaking about his experience in South Africa, Iroro said; “They taught me how to drive faster and also on fitness and media training as well; how to become a better driver and represent myself and country well. It’s really helped me in gaining confidence as a Racing Driver.”

“It’s been a very good experience for me as a driver. I was selected for the FIIA young drivers academy to represent Nigeria due to my good performances abroad in 2014. I got close to the podium in the UK but my aim this year is to be on the podium in one or two races before the end of the season.”
