Tottenham defender ruled out for 2 months with knee ligament injury
Tottenham’s push for the Premier League title have been dealt a heavy blow with the ligament injury to defender Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgium international has been in fine form at the back for Spurs as they continued their impressive run in the league.
He and Toby Alderweireld’s partnership at the back has resulted in the meanest defence so far in the Premier League.
Vertonghen now is expected to miss out for two months due to a knee ligament damage he suffered during their weekend’s away win at Crystal Palace.
The defender twisted his knee as he went to ground from a challenge from Palace striker Connor Wickham in the 75th minute.
He has been on crutches since Saturday, January 23 and had scans Monday at the Clinica Quiron hospital in Barcelona, where the Spurs squad are currently training.
He is set to miss the North London derby against rivals Arsenal on Saturday, March 5.
Tottenham confirmed the damage to be on his ligament but did not state how long he will out.
"Further assessment and scans have confirmed that Jan Vertonghen sustained damage to his medial collateral ligament in his knee at Palace,” the statement on Twitter reads.
“Our medical staff will continue to monitor his progress during his rehabilitation to determine when he will be ready to return to training.”
The Tottenham squad are currently in Barcelona having jetted off on Sunday for a training camp ahead of next Saturday's FA Cup fourth-round clash with Colchester.
