If Marsh gets the nod to play at the Adelaide Oval, the 31-year-old batsman will make his first appearance for his country since earning a pair of ducks in Australia's second Test in South Africa in February.

Marsh has been named in a 13-man squad for the first of four Tests versus India alongside brother Mitchell, with the older of the brothers likely to cover for captain Michael Clarke, who is struggling with a hamstring injury.

"The National Selection Panel has today advised that West Australian Shaun Marsh has been added to the Test squad as an additional batsman for the first Test," read a statement from Cricket Australia on Thursday.

"The Australian Test squad will assemble in Adelaide today and tomorrow ahead of the first Test starting on Tuesday 9 December."

If both Shaun and Mitchell Marsh play in Adelaide, they will become the first set of brothers to play Test cricket for Australia together since Steve and Mark Waugh in 2002.

Shaun Marsh averages 32.86 at Test level across nine matches and has two centuries to his name, including one in the first match in South Africa earlier this year.

Marsh started the tour of South Africa in brilliant touch, scoring his highest Test score - 148 - in the first innings in Centurion as Australia went on to win by 281 runs.

But after notching 44 in the second innings, Marsh faced just three more deliveries for the series as he was twice dismissed without scoring in the second Test as Australia lost by 231 runs, causing him to be dropped for the third match, which the tourists won.

Marsh has scored two centuries for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield this season and has the fifth-best average (76.25) in the Australian domestic first class competition.

Fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Ryan Harris have also been promoted at the expense of left-arm paceman Mitch Starc and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who both played in Australia's last Test against Pakistan.

Shane Watson has also returned to the squad after recovering from a calf injury.
