Tom Wood feels 'guilty' about Liam Williams' injury
England flanker Tom Wood apologised on Sunday for kicking Wales' Liam Williams in the head but insisted he never meant to hurt the full-back.
Williams had to be stretchered from the Twickenham field in the second half of Wales' 28-25 triumph on Saturday, after Wood's right leg collected the 24-year-old in the head as he was lying on the ground.
Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards indicated they were considering reporting Wood for a potential sanction but the England blindside flanker, while admitting he felt guilty, argued he never meant to hurt Williams.
"I do feel guilty. The outcome was not something I intended obviously," Wood said.
"I hate to see anyone go off the field with an injury where they have to go off on a stretcher. It's a tough part of rugby.
"I do apologise for the outcome but I want to assure everyone there was no intent whatsoever. It was just a bounce of the ball at my feet when I was running at 100 miles per hour, desperate to make something positive of it.
"It's something I'm not proud of but there was no intent there. Would I have done anything differently? Probably not because the ball was bouncing at my feet and I was at full tilt looking for the ball; it was unfortunate I caught him sweet with the shin."
Wood revealed he went to Wales' dressing room after the Rugby World Cup match in an effort to check on Williams, although he did not have the chance to speak to the Scarlets man.
"I'm sorry for the outcome, 100 per cent. I'm told he's on his feet and moving around as normal, which is quite a relief," the 28-year-old Northampton Saints back-rower said.
"He was in the shower when I went in to the dressing room but I caught up with a few of the Wales players and they assured me he was on his feet and feeling better and moving around okay. That's a huge relief because there's an element of guilt there."
